Many English learners confuse the words canon and cannon because they sound almost the same. However, they have completely different meanings. Let’s learn the difference!
What is Canon?
A canon is a general rule, principle, or standard. It can also refer to an official collection of works by an author or a religious law.
Examples:
Shakespeare’s plays are part of the literary canon.
The church follows strict religious canons.
This book is considered part of the canon of great literature.
What is Cannon?
A cannon is a large, heavy weapon that fires metal balls. It was commonly used in wars in the past.
Examples:
The soldiers fired the cannon at the enemy.
The museum has an old cannon from the 18th century.
The cannon made a loud noise when it was fired.
Memory Tip
Think of the double n in cannon. It has two barrels just like a real cannon! Canon with one n means one rule or standard. Cannon with two ns means two barrels of a weapon.
